God Abused: When God Becomes a Republican Strategy

In an earlier post, I wrote that Republicans wanted to save God.  How do they do that? By using their faith to numb themselves against reality. They use God to silence the voices of doubt.

Years ago Oral Roberts pleaded with his followers to give money, $1 million, to his church or God was going to call him home.  My response was simple, let God call him home.  Was God now an extortionist?  It seemed that way then, and it surely seems that way now.  God is being sold to the highest bidder. This time it is not just about giving money, but taking it all away from you.  Their faith so strong, belief so devout, that shutting down government is part of the canons.

God is being used against us.  At least their version of God. We are traitors if we question, protest or doubt  Facts become works of the Devil. Questions, protest and doubt to them undermines faith.  Republicans, Teabaggers and right-wing zealots have learned their lessons well. They have all been to the “church” of the National Center for Constitutional Studies [NCSS], an obscure nonprofit run by fringe Mormons The Tea Party loves them, especially the 9.12 Project and the Tea Party Patriots. The NCSS has been touring the country and spreading its ultraconservative Mormon message for 40 years.

Their version of history, a sham history, has been adopted as Gospel by the Tea Party and Glenn Beck.  It is a vision of conspiracy, caliphates, state sovereignty over federal government power.  All this is W. Cleon Skousen’s sham history, “The 5000 Year Leap”.  Skousen argues that constitutional decline began when the federal government overrode the states to grant and enforce equality under the law.  Leap is an illustrated recipe for turning the United States into 50 little theocracies each dictating morality according to its own religious ethics.  These ethics, argues Skousen in Leap, should be transmitted through “extensive Bible reading” in public schools.  If they could stop the clock it would be in 1867 and the Fourteenth Amendment.  It is the central text for Glenn Beck and his television show.  Beck the “evangelist” spreads it on his program.

The NCSS worldview and programs is based on three major pillars: understanding the divine guidance that hs allowed the United States to thrive; rejecting the tyrannical, implicitly sinful, nature of the modern federal government; and possibly tear society as we know it asunder, thus allowing those with sound principles to rebuild the republic along “sounder”, more pious lines. Does this seem remotely familiar?

Remember what Republicans and the Tea Party said when they took control in 2010? Remember the Pledge to America?

We pledge to honor the Constitution as constructed by its framers and honor the original intent of those precepts that have been consistently ignored – particularly the Tenth Amendment, which grants that all powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.

We pledge to make government more transparent in its actions, careful in its stewardship, and honest in its dealing.

Adhere to the Constitution: For too long, Congress has ignored the proper limits imposed by the Constitution of the federal government. Further, it has too often drafted unclear and muddled laws, leaving to an unelected judiciary the power to interpret what the law means and by what authority the law stands. This lack of respect for the clear Constitutional limits and authorities has allowed Congress to create ineffective and costly programs that add to the massive deficit year after year. We will require each bill moving through Congress to include a clause citing the specific constitutional upon which the bill is justified.

All this is from the NCSS.  Beck and his comrades are spreading it as salvation.  God used against us.  It is what they believe and advocate Thier larger and most important mission is to propaganize against America’s secular foundations and sow doubt over the legitimacy of the modern welfare and regulatory state. Turn us all into racists and homophobes. Turn back the clock  before the 14th amendment.  We are slaves. They might be winning. As long as we remain silent they will.

Beck, Geller and Huckabee can talk about the end of the world and who we should follow and what we must believe.  I will not be deceived.  As I said in an earlier post, I do not need someone to tell me what to believe and who God is.  I don’t need a brain. I have one.  I think for myself and that is traitorous to them.  It is not allowed.

God is not a Republican.  Having said that, I will be damned.  Somehow that seems exciting.  The God I know is not about destruction which is what the Republicans and the Tea Party are trying to do.  They lied to us to get elected and they are still lying to us.  Money talks and we don’t have any.  But we have one thing…the vote.  I will not remain silent.  I am, my country is being raped by Republicans and I will not allow it to go on unchallenged.  If only we could abort the Republican Party and the Tea Party.  Wait!  We would all need ultrasounds and religious counseling.  Then again, maybe not, since it is rape by the Republican party.

I will get on my knees and pray that the Republicans and the Tea Party get brains.  I will pray that actually find their morality. I will pray that they truly find God.  I will pray that my vote will throw the bastards out.  And then we will be “free at last, thank God almighty, we are free at last.”
